BALLON D’OR 2026
Bayern Munich’s England captain and Spain’s midfield superstar headline football’s biggest individual awards night, as London hosts the Ballon d’Or ceremony for the first time.
Harry Kane has conquered a summit that eluded English football for a quarter of a century. The Bayern Munich striker claimed the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or on Monday, October 26, becoming the first Englishman since Michael Owen in 2001 to win football’s most prestigious individual award.
Across the Channel, Spain’s Alexia Putellas reclaimed the women’s crown for a third time, ending Aitana Bonmatí’s three-year reign and delivering another landmark moment for women’s football.
The ceremony at London’s Palladium Theatre brought together two extraordinary stories of persistence, goalscoring excellence and redemption. In the award’s 70th anniversary year, the spotlight finally returned to England, not simply as the home of football, but as the birthplace of a new Ballon d’Or chapter.
Kane’s 73-goal season changes everything
The numbers behind Kane’s triumph are staggering. The England captain scored 73 goals for club and country during the 2025–26 season, including 61 for Bayern Munich and 12 for England, according to England Football.
His prolific campaign helped Bayern secure a domestic trophy haul, while his performances in the Bundesliga established him as one of the defining players of the season. He also finished as the German league’s leading scorer for the third consecutive campaign and scored 14 times in the Champions League.
Kane finished ahead of Kylian Mbappé of Real Madrid and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal in the men’s Ballon d’Or voting. Rodri and Lionel Messi completed the top five, according to UEFA’s published rankings.
Victory carries historical weight. Kane became only the fifth Englishman to win the men’s award, following Stanley Matthews in 1956, Bobby Charlton in 1966, Kevin Keegan in 1978 and 1979, and Owen in 2001.
It also marked a breakthrough for Bayern Munich and the Bundesliga: Kane became the first player from Germany’s topflight to win the award since Borussia Dortmund’s Matthias Sammer in 1996.
From early setbacks to football’s ultimate individual prize
Kane’s achievement is also a story of persistence. His development was not an uninterrupted rise to superstardom. Early loan spells and the long process of establishing himself at Tottenham Hotspur preceded his emergence as one of Europe’s most reliable goal scorers.
His move to Bayern Munich added another dimension to his career. In Germany, the England captain continued to deliver goals at extraordinary rates, transforming individual consistency into major team success.
At the London ceremony, Kane reflected on the difficult stages of his journey and stressed the importance of resilience, determination and self-belief.
His Ballon d’Or victory now places him among the most celebrated English players in football history. It also strengthens his standing as a global sporting figure whose career has extended well beyond the Premier League.
Alexia Putellas returns to the summit
The women’s award delivered an equally compelling story.
Alexia Putellas won her third Women’s Ballon d’Or after previously claiming the honor in 2021 and 2022. Her latest victory follows a highly successful season with Barcelona, during which she helped the Catalan club win the Women’s Champions League and other major trophies.
The 32-year-old midfielder was named UEFA Women’s Champions League Player of the Season after recording seven goals and seven assists in Barcelona’s successful European campaign.
She also contributed to Spain’s success in the 2025 Women’s Nations League before joining England’s London City Lionesses ahead of the 2026–27 season.
Putellas’s return to the top is particularly significant given the injury setback that interrupted her career. After she suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury, fellow Spaniard Aitana Bonmatí rose to dominate the award, collecting three consecutive Ballon d’Or titles from 2023 through 2025.
Bonmatí was absent from this year’s shortlist after breaking her leg in December.
Putellas’s third triumph therefore represents more than another personal distinction: it marks the return of a player whose influence on Barcelona and Spanish football helped define an era.
Barcelona and Spain dominate the awards
The ceremony also underlined Spain’s extraordinary influence on modern football.
Barcelona was named Women’s Club of the Year, while head coach Pere Romeu received the women’s Coach of the Year award. The club’s young midfielder Vicky López won the women’s young-talent prize, and goalkeeper Cata Coll received the women’s goalkeeper award.
In the men’s categories, Yamal won the young-talent award, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente was named men’s Coach of the Year, and Unai Simón collected the men’s goalkeeper trophy.
Paris Saint-Germain claimed the men’s Club of the Year award, while Mexican striker Charlyn Corral of Pachuca won the women’s striker prize.
Arsenal forwards Bukayo Saka received the Sócrates Award, which recognizes humanitarian and social initiatives.
Why London made history
The 2026 ceremony was the first Ballon d’Or event held in England and coincided with the award’s 70th anniversary.
Presented annually since 1956 by France Football, the prize has been co-organized with UEFA since 2024. Holding the ceremony in London paid tribute to Stanley Matthews, the English footballer who won the inaugural men’s award seven decades ago.
The choice of venue added symbolic significance to Kane’s victory. The award returned to the country of its first winner in the same year an Englishman ended the longest gap between national winners since Michael Owen’s triumph.
The verdict: a new chapter in football history
Kane’s victory rewards one of the most prolific seasons of his career and ends a 25-year wait for English football. Putellas’s third crown, meanwhile, confirms her enduring place among the defining figures of the women’s game.
One award celebrates a striker whose goals have finally brought him individual recognition at the highest level. The other honors a midfielder who has overcome adversity to reclaim the summit.
Together, their victories made the 2026 Ballon d’Or more than an awards ceremony. They turned London into the stage for a night of sporting history and signaled the arrival of a new chapter for two of football’s most accomplished stars.
