Racist comments were posted online after France’s Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Choameni missed two penalty kicks in the World Cup final versus Argentina.
While Choameni missed the target, Emiliano Martinez of Argentina stopped Koeman from winning his third World Cup championship overall and first since 1986.
Koeman’s team, Bayern Munich, released a statement supporting the 26-year-old player and denouncing the racist remarks made against him.
He wrote on Twitter, “The Bayern family stands behind you, King.” “Neither in our culture nor in sports is racism acceptable.”
Following England’s failure in the Euro 2020 final against Italy the previous year, players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bucayo Saka became the targets of racial taunts.
After missing their respective penalties, all three players were criticized on social media.
