An anonymous donor has trumped all secret Santa gifts this Christmas after donating a number of gold bars to not-for-profit organisations in a German seaside town.
The recipients of the gifts, which weighed 250 grams each, were all located in the German coastal town of Cuxhaven, and included an animal shelter, a hospice, and an organisation helping vulnerable people in the local community.
Each gift was packaged in an envelope with an anonymous letter, wishing the recipient a happy Christmas.
“This is a donation at leisure for the organisation,” the letter begins, before mentioning the specific organisation it is addressed to.
“In support of this important job. Have fun with it and happy Christmas.”
Brigit Block, the chairwoman of the Tierheim Cuxhaven Animal Shelter, spoke about her surprise of finding the generous package in her letterbox.
“We thought: I don’t believe this, this cannot be true,” she said in a conversation with Euronews.
“We cried with joy and still cannot believe it. This gold is an absolute appreciation for our work around the animals that are in need here in Cuxhaven.”
Block told Euronews the bars had been valued at over €17,000, which would be put toward much-needed repairs for their “dilapidated shelter” to keep the animals warm and dry this winter.
When asked what she would say to the anonymous donor if she could talk to them, Block said: “you made Christmas for our shelter. You have no idea how much you have helped us.”
